THE ORIGINAL โง100% HAPPYHappy Cat is the internet nickname for a photograph of a grey British Shorthair with an enormous, goofy smile. The image first surfaced online in the early 2000s on a Russian pet-food website, happycat.ru, and quietly circulated across message boards for years before exploding into a cultural moment.
In January 2007, an anonymous 4chan poster paired the photo with the words "I Can Has Cheezburger?". Within days the caption was everywhere. It kicked off the LOLcats era, launched the ICanHasCheezburger blog, and became the template for pretty much every image macro that followed.
The cat's real name and owner have never been confirmed. The photo predates traceable ownership, and the little grey face in it became one of the most reposted, edited, and captioned images of the pre-social-media web.
